Stars like Jennifer Aniston (favorite color Bombshell) and Christina Aguilera swear by LipSense, a waterproof, cruelty free, and vegan lipstick. I'm pretty low maintenance with make-up- I definitely love getting dolled up every now and then, but on a typical day, my style shines through my outfits rather than my lippy. I used to find pretty much any lip product I tried messy and drying. They would smear, get on my teeth, and my lips would get dry and chapped within 30 minutes of applying. I also hated keeping up with constantly reapplying!
Enter LipSense. This lipstick claimed to be smudge free, but I was skeptical. As I saw more and more people I knew try and love this product, I got curious. So, when I was invited to a trial party to munch on cheese and crackers and try on this elusive lippy, I naturally had to go! (and drag my beauty guru roomie with me ;) ).
And so began my love story with LipSense. Right away, I found this product different than any other lippy I had tried. The color goes on smooth and rich, essential for my darker skin. And, as soon as I put in on, I can't rub it off with a finger or Kleenex. Each tube is also extremely versatile. I can pair with with a gloss to make it shine and my lips extra plump, or use matte gloss to create a totally different look. Since I have really dry lips, being able to finally partake in the matte trend was a dream come true. Where most matte lipsticks are usually too drying, LipSense isn't! And when I'm in the mood for some 90's shine, the glossy gloss is POPPIN. (I love how everything 90's is back!)
Soon after I tried LipSense, I was on Pinterest searching for swatches like crazy to build my collection. One thing I was bummed about was that though the colors were gorgeous, they were more classic than on trend. But, this Fall, LipSense released four amazing colors that rivaled the Kylie Lip Kits and Colourpop! I'm so excited to have partnered with local distributor Perfectly Posh to review these colors and share with you today. Which ones would you try?
Bella is one of the most popular LipSense colors ever. Originally released as limited edition, the company made this permanently part of their collection because people totally loved it!
The color goes on rich and creamy, and I think it looks great paired with a glossy gloss. I had previously tried the Dark Pink color and found it too chalky/fake looking for my lips and skin tone. This perfect pink achieves the ever popular "Posie K" look (Kylie Jenner Lip Kit), Anastasia Beverly Hill's "Soft Lilac," Kat Von D's "Mother," Colourpop's "Clueless," and more.
Espresso is my new Fall and Winter go to color. Wouldn't it look great at your next holiday party?! I love rocking deep brown lips and this liquid lipstick gives the richness of a liner without the drying effect. Paired with the matte gloss, it reminds me of Kylie's True Brown K and other popular dark brown looks. I also think this color would look great with all hair and skin colors.
Hazelnut is honestly the perfect nude for brown girls! I always struggle to find a nude for my Indian skin tone-- other brands and colors I've tried are too light, don't show up, or have too much of a pink undertone. From the bottle, I was worried the same would happen with this LipSense, but I was proven wrong! This color looks great both glossy and matte.
Nude Sienna was a color that took me a sec to come around to. The first time I wore it, I felt it was too pink/orange and didn't look good on me. But the second time I totally loved it! It's a great statement color. I also recommend pairing with a lip colored liner on the sides of the lips if the color is too striking for you. This color is definitely perfect for lighter skin and hair colors.
I loved trying on these four new colors (by the way, the company also released a new Holiday line that I'm dying to try!), but really any LipSense color and product has a lot of benefits I want to make sure I call out.
What sticks out to me about LipSense is the rich color, the versatility, and the fact that it truly does not budge. I mean, this lippy takes waterproof to another level- I’ve literally had days when my color was still gorgeous after meals and a workout!
Applying LipSense is a little more complicated than your average swipe-and-blot method. You need both your desired color and gloss of choice- and if you’re mess-prone like me, a makeup remover.
Favorite Natural Lip Exfoliant: Mint Julips Lip Scrub 0.8 oz by LUSH
Favorite Natural Makeup Remover: S.W. Basics Makeup Remover - 2 oz
Here’s how you get this stuff on your lips:
1. Clean your lips with a makeup remover + exfoliate. This step is optional but seems to make a big difference on how well the color goes on and stays on.
2. Line your lips using the tip of the liquid lipstick wand. Let it dry for 5 seconds.
3. Fill in your lips with the gorgeous, rich color and let dry for 10 seconds. (Make sure to swipe going one direction, covering the entire upper/bottom lip in one swipe.) It seems like the formula does differ by color, but the products I’ll share with you on this post today were all extremely rich and creamy. Loved them!
4. Repeat #3 three times. Let dry 10 seconds each time.
5. Finish the look with your favorite gloss. I have both the “Glossy” gloss and the “Matte” gloss. I’m still amazed how I can have two completely different finishes with one color!
(If you’re more of a visual person, do a search on YouTube or Pinterest on how to apply LipSense- there a ton of helpful videos!)
LipSense tubes also last a loooong time- 3-4 months if you're applying every day (which I don't) with a shelf life of 2 years.
LipSense is sold through independent distributors. Their parent company is Senegence International. They've got a woman CEO (yay!) who founded the company in 1994 with a goal to empower women. This is actually more rare than you think in a male-dominated $62 Billion beauty industry. They make their products cruelty free and in the USA and their distributors choose some great charities for the company to donate to through their MakeSense foundation. From what I can tell, they’ve got a pretty good commission plan for their distributors—no signs on pyramid scheming here.
Here’s what I love about these products- they’re vegan, cruelty free, and made in the USA. You may be surprised how many big beauty brands still test on animals. Estee Lauder, L’Oreal, M.A.C., Revlon, Covergirl and Johnson & Johnson all make that list- eek. This list also includes Aveda, Kiehl’s, Aveeno.. and other seemingly green brands. LipSense products are also lead and wax free.
Here’s where I’m not as happy with this product. If you are at the point in your journey of wearing all natural makeup, this product is not for you. I’m not there yet- and since lipstick that smears, gets on my teeth, and needs to be reapplied throughout the day turns me off from wearing lipstick at all, I have decided to continue wearing LipSense.
There are definitely MAJOR concerns with their ingredient list – just like with most of our skincare and beauty products, unfortunately – and I hope the company invests in improving their ingredients. Download a comprehensive list of ingredients and thoughts on each here:
